XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXX Mulder silently watched his petite, red-headed partner as she poured herself another cup of coffee and sat down at his desk to look at the report on his desk. She seemed distracted, he thought. She hadn't been able to get a hold of John Doggett for the last four days. When she tried to call his cell phone, it had been out of service, and none of his former partners or his family seemed to know where he went. AD Walter Skinner was frustratingly playing dumb. Scully had been the closest to tears that he had seen her in a while. "Hey, why don't you let me take you out for lunch?" Mulder finally spoke, betraying his position. Scully pinched the bridge of her nose as she removed her reading glasses. "I'm good.." Her eyes drifted toward the phone, willing it to ring. Mulder came in closer, softening his tone. "Dana…." "Why isn't he phoning? Where is he?" Mulder stilled her hands. "If you come with me, I'll explain. I promise." ---------- The waitress walked away then Scully broke the silence that had fallen over the table, picking up her fork to eat her salad. "Gonna tell me what's on your mind?" Mulder spoke up. "Doggett came to Russia . Did you know that?" For the first time since their arrival at the restaurant blue eyes met hazel. "He's okay though, isn't he?" Scully couldn't eat. Her hand trembled even as she managed to put her fork down. Mulder's nod was almost one of resignation. "He didn't want me to tell you. Scully, I'm sorry." "I don't understand…" Scully whispered, leaving her food untouched on her plate.. "Why…" "Been asking myself the same..I mean he's not exactly a staunch believer in aliens." Scully started to get up from the table, before Mulder put his hand over top of hers. "Why don't you finish your dinner… I'll see if I can track Doggett down. Okay?" ---------- Scully continued to pick at her salad as her eyes watched Mulder, who was at the door of the restaurant, talking to someone. She watched his body language as she absently put a piece of lettuce into her mouth Mulder was soon opening the glass doors of the pub and grill and walking over. "He got in a couple of hours ago..I just talked to his mother." That was enough for Scully to hastily put down money for her share of the tab and grab her trenchcoat. She started for the door. Mulder drained the last two drops of his iced tea. He also paid his part of the bill and hurried after his petite partner. Scully was in the passenger side of the blue sedan that they were driving. She didn't realize she was holding her breath as she waited for the phone to stop ringing. "Come on...." she whispered to herself. "Please pick up..Please pick up." He answered on the third ring. "John Doggett....." ---------- "John Doggett." "Hi," Scully said softly. In the background, she thought she could hear Luke playing `Cowboys and Indians'—or at the very least, she could assume, from the shouts of "I got ya!' and `You're dead!' and pretend gunshots. Doggett took the phone away from his ear. It sounded to Scully as if he was talking to his son. "Why don't you see what Grandma's up to so Daddy can talk." "You're back from the airport." It was more of a statement than a question. There was a stunned silence on the end of the line. Doggett didn't expect her to know anything about his "off-the-books" trip. Then again, it was probably Mulder that told her, he figured. An inexplicable pang of jealousy went through him as he thought of how close Scully was to her partner. "John? You still there?" Scully queried in the same soft tone. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm still here. Sorry." "Can I come over and see you?" Doggett's mother came into the kitchen to tell him that she was taking Luke and his friends to her house as previously arranged. Doggett nodded in acknowledgement before turning his attention to the conversation at hand. "Sure that sounds great." Enthusiasm managed to creep into his voice. "Mom's taking Luke so it'll just be us." In the back of his mind, Doggett was beginning to debate opening a bottle of wine. Gentleman sense won out in the end. "I'll see you soon." ---------- Mulder had been trying not to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help himself when he glanced over and saw Scully's closed eyes. "Everything okay?" he asked softly. "Yeah. He's okay," Scully replied in the same soft way. Inside though, she still questioned why no one told her where he had been. "Want me to drop you off?" Mulder offered. "Can you?" Mulder nodded slightly as he turned into the mid-afternoon DC traffic. ---------- "Hey…" Doggett gave her a shy smile. "Hi.." She smiled in thanks as he took her jacket. Then she shivered as their hands touched. She was soon in his arms, burying her face in his chest. Doggett held her closer. " I'm okay, Dana..." he whispered. "I'm okay. I promise." Scully ran her hands over his chest and down his arms, needing to make sure that he was okay. Doggett closed his eyes at her silky touch. She whispered breathlessly. "Luke coming soon?" "He'll be at Mom's all weekend." He captured her lips again. He gently picked her up in his arms and carried her to his bedroom.
