Title: Distractions Author: Jacquie Sabatier A/N: This hasn't been betaed, so I apologize in advance for any inconsistencies. . Summary: an AU version of season one's "Jersey Devil"- Mulder and Scully are still partners. Doggett has moved back to DC, but he's still a cop, not an FBI agent. Going with the premise that the previously met...at least for the first seven seasons… *g* Scully eventually had to excuse herself from the lecture. Mulder had barely noticed her departure, she noticed. She shouldn't have been surprised. He had always been wrapped up in his work. She had even gone as far as telling Ellen that. She opened the doors into the warm summer air, beginning to walk toward Capitol Hill. She spotted a tall dark haired man holding the hand of a boy who looked to be about four or five years old. The face of John Doggett flashed through her mind. What she hadn't told Mulder was the real reason she had turned down Rob's second date was because she had gotten a message on her answering machine from Doggett. He was back in town after being in New York for his class reunion. She sat down on a park bench to gather her thoughts "Dana?" Doggett's voice startled her. "John... Hey." Scully tried to hide her surprise at seeing the subject of her daydreaming standing right there in front of her. She moved over for him to sit on the bench beside her. "Didn't mean to scare ya." Doggett smiled sheepishly. "I'm just surprised to see you..." Scully managed a smile of her own. "What brings you by?" "You." The honest response tumbled out of his mouth before he could stop himself. "Really?" A nervous giggle escaped her lips. "My son. He wants to meet you." Blue eyes met blue eyes as Doggett waited for her response. "Are you sure it's just Luke?" Scully teased even as she felt a distinct lump in her throat. She started a little at the feel of his hand in hers. When their fingers met, it was as if they knew they were meant to fit together. "Wanna get out of here?" she asked softly. Doggett didn't hesitate to pull her off the bench and against him. He buried his face in her hair, needing the contact. "Yeah…yeah, I do" he whispered, so softly she barely heard him. "More than anything." Scully smiled up at him. Doggett managed to smile back. He gave her hand a squeeze. "My car's this way." Still hand in hand, they exited the park. Scully looked out the window as they pulled up in front of Doggett's three bedroom house almost twenty-five minutes later. Luke's nanny met them at the door. "Mr. Doggett! Welcome back." A little mini version of Doggett- it must have been Luke she thought- ran into Doggett's waiting arms. "I missed you buddy." Doggett held his little boy- the sunshine of his life since his wife had died two years previously. Scully was able to observe unnoticed for a few minutes until the boy pointed at her. "Daddy, who's that?" She barely resisted the urge to laugh as Doggett introduced her to the little boy. Luke's blue eyes looked up at her. "You're the one my daddy loves." Scully's jaw unconsciously dropped as her eyes met Doggett's across Luke's head. His cheeks tinged red as he asked Luke "Did you eat all your vegetables?" Luke made a face. "I didn't like my broccoli." "It'll help you get big and strong like your daddy." Scully didn't know why but it tumbled out of her mouth. Doggett couldn't resist smiling. Luke sat up a little taller. "You want to be like your daddy, right?" "I guess so," was the shy response. Luke's nanny returned to get him into his pyjamas. "Say good night to your daddy" Luke gave Doggett a big hug. Scully gave the little boy a friendly smile and a "Good night." She felt a hard lump in her throat as she turned her attention back to the brown haired blue eyed man in front of her—she knew it was corny, but he really was the man of her dreams. They just stared at each other until Doggett cleared his throat. "I'm forgetting my manners," he apologized. "Can I get you anything? Coffee? Tea?" "Tea sounds great. Maybe some popcorn to go with it?" "Sure…I can do popcorn..." Doggett seemed disappointed that the moment had been broken but he did his level best to accommodate her. Scully took his hand and lead him toward the couch. Before either of them really knew what was happening, his hands were under her shirt and he was drawing her so she was on her back and he was covering her body with his. They started watching a movie on TV but their hands met inside the popcorn bowl. "Scully…" She tried to withdraw her hand but Doggett tightened his grip. "No..." he whispered. "Please." He distinctly felt the shiver go up Scully's elbow as she removed the popcorn and set it on the coffee table. She was about to reach for the remote to turn off the movie but Doggett pulled her back. "Where do you think you're goin' Miss Scully?" he murmured in her ear. She was pulled against his chest which took her completely by surprise. "Relax" Doggett whispered as he stroked her forearms. Getting a little bolder now Scully ran her tongue along Doggett's bottom lip. She wanted him to respond to her. After a moment Doggett's body began to respond to her prompts. He softly whispered a reminder they had to keep it down. Then with a kiss to her neck. "Wrap your legs around me." Scully buried her face into his neck. Doggett closed his eyes when he felt her hot breath on his neck. Being careful not to wake Luke Doggett made his way to his bedroom on the end of the hallway. With another kiss to her lips Doggett laid her down on the bed. She looked up at him with shining blue eyes telling him that this was all she wanted. She knew she wasn't going to regret it in the morning. Doggett gave her a smile back to let her know that he didn't think it was a mistake either. He closed the bedroom door behind them before entwining his body with hers…
