SUMMARY: Scullys down about her birthday and Doggett knows exactly 
what to do.

"Everything happens for a reason"

The rain drowned the windows casting an even dimmer atmospheric light 
upon the closet of an office. Dana scully sighed as she watched mother 
earths tears sheilding the only veiw she had of the outside world from 
down in the basement. 

Doggett had been secretly glancing at her now and again, her posture 
and expression hadnt changed for the last 40 minutes. She sat with her 
head leaning against one hand staring dazily into what seemed to be 
nothingness. A few times she had closed her eyes slowly and hadnt 
opened them for a few minutes, Doggett had thought she was sleeping 
but she wasnt...only her spirit was asleep.

Doggett was worried, she'd been like this all day, weak, shaky, 
distant...was she ill? he couldnt bring himself to ask, he already knew 
what her answer would be, just a nod and a faint smile maybe he would 
even be graced with a few solem words.

Damn she's looking at me!

"Agent doggett?"

"Yea"

She smiled and slowly blinked again.....oh man she smiled

"Why are you looking at me like that"

"Like what" he smiled back

"Like the way you usually look at me when you wanna ask me something 
but wont because you think i might bite your head off"

He laughed into his retreat

"Thats usually the case"

"Ok.....i promise i'll be nice" she smiled again and faced him

"I'm just worried about you thats all"

"Your always worried about me"

"Your always giving me reason to"
 
there was silence again, Scully looked back at the rain then back at 
Doggett

"its my birthday tomorow" she slumped her head back onto her hands

"And your upset because......."
"John.....tomorow im gonna be another year older! another year gone like 
that! and what do i have to show for it! im still in the same god damned 
job with the same mindless people..."

Doggett looked hurt

"No sweety not you"

She rubbed her eyes and looked back out to the rain

'Sweety' hmm that was new to Doggetts ears, she's never called him 
anything like that before

Scully piped up again

"I mean...its just....well...........meh forget it!"

"No tell me"

She didnt take her eyes of the rain

"hmmm..........ok......ok It was the night before my 16th birthday...nobody 
had mentioned it all day so i decided i wouldnt either....i just went to bed 
and i prayed they hadnt forgotten" She laughed and continued
"Then i remember my dad waking me up, it was still dark outside i looked 
at my whatch, i remember the time perfectly, it was 34 minutse past 11, 
he told me to get dressed quiety then meet him outside....so i did and 
there he was waiting....with two beautiful horses. He told me to be quiet 
so i wouldnt wake my mom, I'd always wanted to ride one but she 
wouldnt allow it, she thought it was to dangerous.........anyway we got on 
these two stunning horses and Dad lead us to the top of this huge hill 
where we could see the whole town.....all the lights and the stars...."
She thought for a moment, lost in her memories

"it was breath taking....its a moment with my father ill never forget. You 
wanna know what he said to me"

Doggett leaned closer over his desk 

"He said "Promise me, When your a grown woman and a man in your life 
makes you feel this special on your birthday...let him into your heart and 
hold on....because if any one can love you this much...they'll love you 
forever.......happy birthday starbuck"

silence again

"Thats beautiful"

"Yeah i know" She looked at her desk

"i made a promise that night a promise that haunts me every 
year.........ive never felt as specail and as loved as i did that night......and 
i know i never will"

Doggett didnt know what to say, he knew these words where tearing her 
apart, but she was strong and it didnt show. But what she was saying 
hurt doggett a little, it seemed this strong courageous woman was giving 
up, she was doing the one thing Doggett thought her incapable of. He 
rose and picked up his things cathcing scullys attention.

"It'll happen for you Agent scully.... everything happens for a reason and 
thats a reason youll find out when you least expect it"

Scully smiled

"Thanks John"

"For what"

"Trying....trying to give me hope" She stood, put on her coat and went to 
him
"you mean more to me than you know Agent" She kissed his cheek and 
left the room

Doggett stood there alone, thinking of her story, the way she had smiled 
at him, it reasured him that the past to years with him hadnt meant 
nothing to her, that she had excepted Mulder was alive and safe but 
never comming back and that He was here for her now, it was his 
responsability to secure her happiness.

A sudden thought crept into Doggetts mind, it brightened his whole face, 
he had a plan. He switched of the basement lights and headed home.

Scully lay in bed gazing at her clock. it was 34 minutes past 11. A 
sudden knock at her door shook her from her memories and she went to 
answer it.

It was her landlord

"Hey its late whats up?" Scully smiled sheepishly, she knew she was late 
on rent AGAIN

Her landlord suddenly handed her a rose, Scully laughed

"Whats this for"

"Its not from me....i was woken up about 15 minutes ago by a guy 
claiming to be a good friend of yours, he told me to give you this......and 
this" He handed her a note

"And said he'll be waiting"

Scully opened the note confused and read it to herself
 
"I'll give all the roses it takes for you to reach the stars again -- 'J' "

"Roses?" She looked at her landlord and he nodded towards the hall, 
Scully stepped out of her apartment and her heart skipped a beat, there, 
infront of her was a trail of beautiful deep red roses leading down the hall 
and up into the stair well.

"oh my god" She clutched the note to her heart and ran back into her 
apartment for her shoes. She felt like she was 16 again, nothing could 
remove the curious grin from her face, she pulled her silk dressing gown 
over her black nightie and went back to the hall.

"Right im going back to bed" 

"Ok! thankyou! Oh my god!" She was so excited, so curious, so scared, 
scared of the sudden feelings being drawn from her soul into her heart

"Oh and dana you still owe me rent" yelled her landlord as he marched 
away

"Yes yes i know tomorow i promise" She locked her door still clutching 
her rose and note and slowly turned and followed the trail.

Scully slowly picked up every single rose until she finally found her self at 
the door to the roof. this was it. she had a million thoughts rushing 
through her head

Why would John do this for me, why am i feeling like this, what the hell is 
going to happen when i see him, i want to see him so bad!

Scully took a deep breath, "everything happens for a reason" she 
whispered to herself before opening the door.

A cool breeze hit her, she closed her eyes and breathed in the night air, 
the scent of roses, but nothing prepared her eyes nor her heart for the 
scene that embraced them as her eyes flickered open.

The roof top was scattered with candles upon candles upon candles, 
they mimicked the twinkling of the stars and she felt she was walking 
among them. 

He'd done it.

She welcomed back the feeling of pure serenity, love and happines with 
open arms, arms that longed to be around John doggett......where was 
he?

"John!" She called out, shutting the door behind her

"John"   nothing

Suddenly panic stuck, what if this wasnt a note from John, what if 
someone had herd her telling her story, what if they had set this all thing 
up as a trap, a trap she had blindly fallen into, what if......

"Happy birthday dana"

All thoughts of danger disapeared as a warm familiar voice came from 
behind her. She didnt turn yet, just smiled and spoke

"I cant believe you did this"

"just wanted to make you smile again.........you are smiling arent you?"

Scully turned and doggetts heart lifted and the sight of her beautiful 
lightened face and glistening eyes

"Of course i am" The glistening in her eyes turned to overwhelmed tears 
"I never thought i could feel like this again.......youve taken my breath 
away John"

They smiled at each other longingly, they both knew what each other 
wanted, what they where both waiting for....one more step, to close the 
agonising gap between them

"I'm just so glad it stopped raining"

Scully laughed and went to him but it was asif the devil had been 
listening as the heavens opened and the pair where soaked within 
minutes

Doggett grabbed scullys hand and tried to open the roof door but it had 
locked behind scully, he pounded and pounded but it wouldnt open, 
Scully looked around for shelter but nothing she looked back at doggett 
and they laughed together.

"I cant believe this!" they looked around them, what once was a sea of 
fiery candles was now a bed of smoke

"everythings ruined.....Dana im sorry"

But she just shook her head and gazed at him

They looked into one anothers eyes for what seemed an eternity, the rain 
lashing down upon there bodies.

Doggetts thumb trailed a rain drop as it slowly cascaded down Scullys 
cheek to her lips and he let his thumb linger there for a moment before 
drawing her closer.......closer.......closer

"HEY! was that you pounding!"

Doggett dropped his hand, rolled his eyes and turned

"Yes im sorry sir but we got locked out"

"Well what do you expect! you think i leave this open all night for any old 
romeo to come along!" He said sarcastically

Doggett sighed 

Scullys landlord looked around 

"You gonna move those candles buddy" 

"Yes sir i'll do it tomorow"

He just tutted, propped the door open and left again muttereing to 
himself
"Puh! candles in the rain! Puh! Jackass!"

Doggett turned to a giggling scully

"Its not funny"

"Yea it is c'mon" she lead him back into the building and to her apartment

"You wanna come in"

"yes" Doggett seemed uneasy

"But......"scully questioned

"its not your birthday yet, theres still half a minute yet until i can give you 
your real gift"

Doggett kept an eye on his whatch

"Doggett theres nothing else you could possible give me......" 

her sentence was cut short as Doggett pulled her into a kiss. He 
wrapped her in his strong arms and held her against the door as there 
mouths passionatly explored each others. Scully burried her fingers into 
Doggetts hair and grasped at it as his tongue teased hers. The moment 
was perfect, she had made her promise to her father and she had 
opened her heart.

They broke there kiss and doggett handed her another rose

"how many roses did you count"

"49 why?"

"The date we first met"

"The fourth of september...yes... oh my god" She smiled at him there 
arms still wrapped around each other

"I love you Dana" He said it, without hesitation or thinking he said it

"I love you too"
