The kids were found safe and sound and the kidnapper was most definitely enjoying his much earned jail time. It was 3am, Doggett was tired, Scully was stressed and the fact that they were stranded in an undersized, hot and crowded New Jersey airport wasn’t helping. “Is that our plane?” “Yeah……I think so” “Then what’s taking them so long Damnit?” Scully pulled off her jacket and threw it on the chair next to her “The storm is pretty bad I guess their just waiting for the weather to clear” Her attitude was not helping, Scully had been moody all week, he just presumed it was the time of the month or something and tried his best not to let her bitchy comments and argumentative outbursts get to him. Suddenly there was a call “WOULD ALL PASSENGERS FOR THE 3AM FLIGHT TO WASHINGTON PLEASE PROCEED TO GATE 4 AS BORDING WILL COMENSE IMMEDIATELY…WE APPOLOGISE FOR THE DELAY” “Finally” Scully grabbed her coat and they headed for the gate. Their seats felt surprisingly comfortable compared to the horrid airport ones, Doggett immediately settled in and was slowly drifting off when… “Oh my god!” “What” Doggett almost grunted, he was sooooo tired “I really don’t think we should be flying in this” Doggett looked through the window, the rain was horrendous and he could see small lightning bolts hitting the ground in the distance “Well if the pilot thinks its safe……I guess its safe” He relaxed again “Yeah but what if he’s wrong, what if…” “Scully! I could of easily driven us but no! You said we ought to get a plane so here we are” “Yeah I know……sorry its just……I haven’t flown for a while and never in this sort of weather before” “Well just do what I do! Close your eyes……try to relax a little” She nodded and closed her eyes as the plane began to set off from the runway. Doggett looked at her she was tense and he could sense her fear he took her hand and she nearly jumped out of her skin “Sorry! Sorry I’m just a little nervous” “Its ok……man its like you’ve never flown before” “God it feels that way to……I don’t know what’s wrong with me……I think its because I’m tired” “Well you’ll be ok” He realised he was still hold of her hand, he let go pretended he was fiddling with his seat belt. The plane was in the air and the thunderstorm was still bad. Doggett was sound asleep but for Scully, sleep was the last thing on her mind. Turbulence was pretty bad; She could feel her stomach turning. One of the flight attendants noticed her anxiety “Would you like something to drink ma’am, flying through storms tend to do this to you” “No I’m fine thank you, how the hell do you cope?” The attendant leaned in and covered her mouth with her hand “I good strong dose of whiskey usually does the trick” she winked and was on her way Scully thought to her self she felt her temperature rising and her head was spinning. She didn’t want to wake Doggett, he looked so at ease so she dared her self to unbuckle her belt and make her way to the toilets. “Sir……SIR” Doggett was woken my a worried looking attendant “Sir I think you should go and check on your wife…she’s been in the toilets for over half an hour now” He rolled his eyes and got up “thanks” “Scully……are you ok in there” He heard her throw up “Scully can you open the door” He herd a click and made his way in. Scully was on her knees leaning over the toilet he knelt beside her and pulled back her hair “Hey……are you ok” “Yeah I think so……HURGH!” She threw up again, Doggett couldn’t help but laugh “Its not funny!” “I know I’m sorry……I didn’t realise you were so bad why didn’t you wake me” “I didn’t want to bother you……you were so tired today” “I’m sorry about this week” “What about it” he handed her a tissue and she flushed the loo and sat back “I’ve been such a cow with you……I’m sorry……I was so stressed about that case……I don’t stop to think about others when that happens……you forgive me” She managed a smile “Course” who cared if her hair was all over the place and the faint smell off her puke still lingered in the air he was mad about this woman! “You feel better” he stroked her hair “Yeah……yeah I do” they had been looking at each other for a while now and Doggett was getting a little uncomfortable “You think you can stand” Scully snapped out of her trance “Oh erm yeah I think so” She took his hand and he lifted her to her feet. Suddenly the plane swerved violently throwing them together, Doggett landed on the toilet seat followed by Scully. The plane swerved again and they fell to the floor in an uncomfortable heap. They couldn’t help but laugh, Scully realised her fear had died as Doggett lay on top of her “Are you ok” Doggett tried to stand but fell again “Haha! Erm yeah I’m ok” “THIS IS YOUR PILOT SPEAKING I APPOLOGISE FOR THE SLIGHT TURBULANCE WE WHERE FLYING THROUGH A BIT OF A BAD PATCH BUT IM GLAD TO ANNOUNCE ALL IS NOW CLEAR” “Thank god for that” They had managed to stand. Scully was suddenly very aware of how small this place was and how close they were but for some strange reason she felt very at ease a little excited actually. Doggett had also noticed and excited wasn’t the word! He was burning up! He found her gazing at him again and he gulped sheepishly making her blush. “Erm…Scully…you want a drink or something……mite settle your stomach a bit” “Erm yeah…yeah sounds good after you” She indicated towards the door accidentally brushing his crotch with her hand. “Whoa……sorry! Sorry I…I” “Lets get that drink” “Yeah!” They exited the cubical and made there way to their seats. 20 MINS LATER Scully had finally relaxed and fallen asleep, only it was on Doggetts shoulder. His heart raced every time her chest rose and fell onto his arm as she breathed. His skin quivered every time she blew onto his neck, it was killing him. To save himself from embarrassment he slowly tried to tilt her away but that just made her cling to him tighter. The only thing he could do was to try and sleep himself, forget who was clinging to him and try to distract his thoughts away from what he wanted to do to her right now. She stirred suddenly and awoke Doggett screamed to himself “Hey……what’s up” Scully immediately noticed his unease “Oh my god was I talking in my sleep” She looked away sheepishly remembering the dream she had just had about him “No…no!” She quietly sighed relief to herself “Its just I’m a little antsy to get off this damn plane” “Oh yeah…ahem…me too” she looked at her watch “Not long now” WASHINGTON DC AIRPORT “Oh what a trip, jeeze I’m aching all over” Doggett stretched out his broad arms “You should get a massage when you get back” “You offering” This suggestion shocked but slightly aroused scullys imagination, she giggled it off awkwardly and they headed for their cars “So……I’ll see you bright and early for work Monday” Doggett flung his case into the trunk of his car “Erm……sure yeah” she did the same while her mind raced with excuses to make him stay a little longer with her “I’m in no fit state to cook tonight you want to grab something to eat later……say 6 you look as though you need some sleep” “I look that bad huh” “NO! Noooo you look gorgeous” “Erm……thanks” Doggett saw her embarrassment and laughed it off “You don’t look to bad yourself……dinner sounds great” “Right good dinner it is then be at mine for six…bye” she hurried into her car and couldn’t get away fast enough she felt like dying of shame but then again it was Soooooo true! “So where we going” It was 7:00pm Doggett had driven Scully round for about an hour and she was starving “We wont be long” “we’re in the middle of nowhere” “Trust me” his cunning smile made Scullys heart skip a beat. She was being ridiculous, this was wrong, why was she feeling like this. Doggett was to much of a friend, he’d never think of her in that way. She started to think of Mulder every time she began to question her feelings towards other men he would always pop into her head and guilt would take over, then fear, then regrets! She was sick of it……but what could she do Mulder was still out there somewhere just waiting for the right time to return but what would happen then……nothing! They agreed this before he left……they would forever remain friends nothing more and nothing less. That’s what they had BOTH decided and that’s what she wanted but why did she always feel so guilty. This had to change……She had to change! It could be months, years before Mulder returned and then maybe all the single attractive, Doggetts……Ahem MEN! Single, attractive men would be gone, taken and living there lives with women who actually had the guts to make a move. she sighed and settled back with a smile on her face “Whats up” “Nothing……absolutely nothing” She reached over to his stereo cranked up the volume and began jigging to muse “Time is running out” Doggett couldn’t help but laugh at this suddenly strange new Scully sat next to him nodding her head to the beat and humming the words to some wacky but cool tune “You been smoking something scully” She giggled and playfully punched his arm “I don’t know what it is I’ve just got this energy tonight” “Well I’m liking it keep it up” He began to nod along with her until they finally arrived at their destination Scully read the sign “Burt’s Burger Banging Bonanza……well that’s a mouthful” “Surprisingly so are his burgers Scully I’m not kidding this guy makes the best burgers……EVER!” He shot round and helped her out of the car “And to think I put on my best outfit” she giggled sarcastically Doggett had a big kid like grin on his face, she’d never seen him like that before……they were going to have a great night! “JOHN! My man” A fat bald man came from around the counter and embraced Him “Hey Burt how’s things” “Great…business is booming” he laughed sarcastically “Where have you been I haven’t seen you for a long time” Scully laughed at the thought of him spending his spare time here and then felt kind of pathetic when she realised he actually had a life! “And who is this lovely young lady” “This is Dana we work together” it was nice he referred to her by her first name. “Well any friend of Johns is a friend of mine……welcome to my world Dana make yourself at home……What can I get ya! “Erm make it two of my usual’s” he turned to scully “you wont be able to eat for weeks” “Oh that sounds comforting” she giggled and they sat down It was 9:30 Scully rubbed her full belly “You were wrong I don’t think I’ll be able to eat for months……It was delicious thank you” “Your not disappointed then” “No way! You are so bringing me here again!” “C’mon lets head back……Thanks Burt we’ll see you later” “Yeah don’t leave it to long” They headed for the car and drove home. SCULLYS APPARTMENT 10:15pm “Well thank you for dinner and for driving me home and for walking me to my door” “You’ve very welcome” they gazed at each other neither of them wanting to end this night. Doggett leaned in and kissed her cheek his lips lingered there slowly gliding towards hers……he pulled back. “Iya……erm……I……good…goodnight” He tried to escape but was restrained by Scullys arms suddenly wrapping around his neck pulling him in for another kiss. A lustful numbing sensation flushed through their bodies, Scully was pinned to the door as Doggetts hands roamed her waist and thighs. She parted his lips with her tongue and explored his. She was in heaven and so was he how he had longed for this moment and secretly so had she. He fumbled with the door handle and they fell into her apartment still in lip lock. Feeling Doggetts overpowering body on top of her made her wish she was in the bedroom already she wanted him so bad. “Ahem am I interrupting something” Doggett and Scully jumped to their feet in shock as the lights where switched on……it was Mulder! “This isn’t what it looks like” Scully tided her hair and clothes “What!” Doggett protested “Mulder this is exactly what it looks like” he gave Scully a look “No Mulder we where just……and we fell……and” “Dana you don’t have to explain yourself to him” “I’m not I’m just…” “Guys! Guys it ok I shouldn’t of burst in here……well the door was open……and well I guess you kind of burst in here yourself” “Mulder I’m so sorry! Doggett I think you should leave” “What!” Doggett was angry at Scullys behaviour she was acting like a child who’d just got busted by her parents. “No Scully don’t make him leave on my account I better leave you……to……ahem” “Mulder its not like that” Scully was now literally pushing Doggett out the door “We Were just……it was an accident” she looked at Doggett “A mistake” His face fell “I wont be long go sit down” Scully pulled Doggett outside and shut the door “I’m sorry that shouldn’t of happened” “Why? Because of mulder……I thought you where just friends” “We……we are” “THEN STOP LIVING IN THE PAST DANA……GROW UP! You cant mess with peoples feeling like this!” “John……I’m sor…” “HOLD YOUR APPOLOGIES DANA! You know I’m actually glad Mulder stopped us! He stopped something really stupid” “Is that what you think this was” “Do you give me any option not to” He walked away. Scully tried to call to him but he ignored her and left. “SHIT!” She replayed her words in her head ‘accident’ ‘mistake’ She stormed into her apartment Mulder came to hug her and she slapped him “What the hell are you doing here!” “Well its nice to see you to” he rubbed hi face and sat down “Sorry……I’m sorry……man you pick your moments” “So there was something going on” “Was!” “Why did you deny it” “Because I’m stupid because I’m scared” “Of what” “Of what you’d think of me” “Well it was a shock” he stood up and hugged her “He’s not right for you……I’m here now……we can start over……me and you, lets get away somewhere!” “What” Scully pushed him away “Are you insane……you expect to just waltz in here whenever to damn feel like it and expect my feelings to switch just like that” “You don’t love me?” “I love you mulder……I’m just not in love with you” “You’re in love with Doggett” “Yes I am” She sat down “And now he thinks I don’t, he thinks I’m still in love with you” “I’m sorry” he sat beside her “what for” “For coming here unannounced and messing your life up……again” “You’re getting pretty good at that……sorry that wasn’t what I meant” “yeah it was……its ok I know it’s the truth……I should respect you so much more than that……I came here hoping you’d leave with me and that’s just a pathetic excuse for me not wanting to be alone for the rest of my life” “Your not alone” “I know……I’m in denial” she laughed “You should be with Doggett he could give you the life you deserve……all I can offer you is a one way ticket to nowhere with a nobody” “You’re not a nobody……you’re my Mulder” They hugged “I’m going to go” “Where?” “Oh somewhere I don’t know……all this ‘life’ stuff you keep talking about sounds pretty neat……I’m going to go and get me one of those” “you’re coming back right” “I’ll be back……but I’ll knock next time” and with that he left. Scully couldn’t believe how easy that had been. Admitting she wasn’t in love with Mulder and letting him go again. She was shocked but glad he understood her now, understood what she needed and who she needed it from. Thinking John would still be angry with her she decided a telephoned apology wasn’t appropriate instead she decided to sleep on how to tell him how much he meant to her tomorrow. 6:00am SCULLYS APPARTMENT Scully was woken by the piercing sound of her telephone “Scully” “Scully its Skinner is Agent Doggett with you” “No why?” “He had a hearing at 5 this morning and never showed and his cleaner said he hadn’t been home all night” “What! He left here about 10:30 last night I presumed that’s where he was going” “Another thing that’s worrying us” “What! What is it” “His car was found on an abandoned road this morning……empty” “Where” “Near west lake” “oh my god” Scully remembered passing by there on the way to the burger bar last night, she thought he maybe went back there to see burt “I think I might know where he is” “Well can you go and get him please……give me a call as soon as you do ok” “Yes sir” she hung up and got ready as fast as she could she tried her best to remember the burger bars exact location and made her way to it BURTS BURGER BANGING BONANZA 7:15 am “Dana nice to see you again” “Sorry Burt no time to talk have you seen John” “Sure I saw him last night” “No I don’t mean that……has he been back since we came together” “That’s what I’m telling you he did come back last night……very upset he was” “Upset?” “Yeah mentioned something about the love of his life and about his heart breaking oh and then about some guy called Mulder……yeah he was calling this guy all sorts don’t think he liked him very much” “What time did he leave” “It was around 1:00 this morning……said he was going to get away from it all or some thing” “WHERE! Where did he go” “Sorry Dana I don’t know” Suddenly a frantic hiker barged in “Hey! Get help, police, anything there’s a guy in the woods I think he’s dead” “Oh my god John!” Scully followed the man as Burt called for an ambulance Scully could see a lifeless heap in the distance “Looks like he was attacked by someone” The man stood back as Scully went to him “Thank god he’s still breathing……John its Dana can you here me……oh my god what happened to you” He was unconscious, he had a bust lip and an impact bruise to his forehead, he was so cold she hugged him tight an waited for the ambulance WASHINGTON HOSPITAL 9:00am Scully was sat in the visitors room waiting for news, they hiker was being interviewed by an officer “What time did you find the victim” “ah it was around 7:00 this morning I’d been fishing in the near by lake and was heading back to my car when I saw him” “Did you touch the victim” “No sir! I went to find help as quickly as possible……I saw this burger place and went there” “Did you see anybody near the body at the time you found him……anyone running away” “No there was no one” “Thank you that will be all sir” “Thanks” the hiker turned to Scully “I hope your friend gets better” “Thanks” she managed a smile and he left Suddenly a nurse entered “Miss Scully” “That’s me” she rose to her feet and tried to decipher what the nurse’s facial expression meant “Your Partner is going to be fine” “Oh thank god” she collapsed back onto the couch “What happened?” “Well the fracture to his temple suggests he was attacked with a heavy blunt object, being in the forest I’m guessing it was a large sick or log of some sort he was also hit in the mouth but neither impacts were hard enough to cause any serious damage the only thing he’ll be needing is a good warm bed and a cold remedy he’s lucky he didn’t catch pneumonia” “Thanks thank you so much can I see him” “Sure” DOGGETTS HOUSE 2:30pm “Now the nurse said to go straight to bed, I’m going to make you some soup ok (Chicken soup of course)” Doggett was silent he had been in the hospital and all the way back to his house “John would you like anything else” He ignored her again “Damnit John have you any idea how worried I’ve been!” She sat beside him “Why did you go back there? Why didn’t you go home?” “To an empty house again……to an empty life!” “You don’t have an empty life” “oh no I’ve got you AND Mulder now haven’t I” “Is this about last night” he didn’t answer “What I said was stupid……I was afraid of what Mulder would do” “No you where afraid of what he’d think you’re ashamed of me” “That’s not true I love you?” “What” He turned towards her ”You heard me……I love you……when you left I realised how stupid I was being, how unfair I was being to you and myself……I love Mulder I’ll always love Mulder but I’m in love with you……I’ll always be in love with you” Doggett was speechless “Now go to bed please……I’ll make your soup” She went to the kitchen. She was acting like the words she had just said were part of her everyday vocabulary they didn’t hinder her at all, but him! Jeeze he was going crazy! “Dana don’t you want to talk about this” “What’s to talk about……I’m in love with you……you’re in love with me its simple……now go to bed” Still in complete shock he did as he was told “You’re coming too right” “Sure don’t you know body heats the best cure for a cold” she flashed him a seductive smile as he made his way upstairs.
