Michael Kritschgau

Michael Kritschgau first appeared in "Gethsemane" (4X24), where he destroys Mulder's whole belief system by informing him that Mulder had been used to perpetuate a government hoax about extraterrestrial life. "The lies are so deep," he says. "The only way to cover them is to create something more incredible. They invented you." Working for the Department of Defense, Kritschgau ran that department's agitprop arm for a decade, disguising information since the 1950's. He says that the government created the UFO paranoia to cover up its maneuverings after World War II. Kritschgau was also employed by Roush, the secret biotechnology lobbying firm.

He comes to Mulder out of guilt for his own son's Gulf War illness, but Kritschgau's son eventually dies. In "Redux" (5X02), he leads Mulder to the cure for Scully's cancer. After testifying that he leaked information to Mulder, Kritschgau was removed from his employment and claimed that the government ruined his life. He helps to explain Mulder's strange brain activity in "The Sixth Extinction" (7X03), but when he researches further by hacking into Scully's computer files on the spaceship, Kritschgau's involvement ultimately costs him his life.
