"Fox!" - Samantha Mulder (Little Green Men)

Samantha Mulder

An eight-year old Samantha disappeared from the Mulder family home. "It tore the family apart," her brother tells Scully. "No one would talk about it." Mulder himself repressed the incident until his 1989 hypnotic regression sessions that freed his confused memories. For almost ten years, the search for his sister drove Mulder to abandon a dazzling FBI career for the dusty realms of the X-Files.

In that time, Mulder was given hints of her fate. The appearance of a woman claiming to be Samantha in "Colony" (2X16), "End Game" (2X17) and "Redux II" (5X03) seemed to solve the mystery, but Mulder found that what he saw was merely a clone of his real sister. Childlike versions of Samantha appeared in "Herrenvolk" (4X01), but they too were clones. He finally finds proof in "Closure" (7X11) that a young Samantha was abducted for alien testing and was sent to live with the Cigarette-Smoking Man. She ran away from him and ended up at a hospital. CSM and his accomplices arrived at the hospital to take her back, but she had vanished. Samantha was saved by a "walk-in," a spiritual intervention that rescues children from horrible situations by transporting their souls through starlight. Mulder sees Samantha's spirit and finally understands that she is dead. He happily tells Scully, "I'm free."
