Noromo - Essays
"It's so easy
to jump into bed. Who needs to see that? That happens
on every show. What's so hard about having sex? It's
the same thing as nudity . . . big deal. It's better
to have two people who are actually interested in
each other beyond that. The easiest thing in the world
is to be attracted to somebody. It's harder to actually
live with them and work with them. And that's a fact,
Jack." - David Duchovny
Interested in getting into the mind of
a Noromo? Here you can find Noromo explainations of
so-called "shippy" (or "drippy")
scenes in "shippy"/"drippy" episodes
of "The X-Files". Other interesting Noromo
adventures can be found here as well. So maybe it's
not all essays, who cares! It's all fun!
"End Game" by JillyBee
After the trade on the bridge with the Alien Bounty
Hunter where Mulder sacficied the Samantha clone's
life in exchange for Scully, many shippers were convinced
he made this decision because "he loved Scully."
:-P However, I believe Mulder never even intended
for a trade to take place.....after all, agents with
guns aimed at the Alien Bounty Hunter were surrounding
the bridge. He thought he could save both their lives
and kill the Alien Bounty Hunter. Even if Mulder knew
he had to make that sacrifice, he must have had some
indication that Samantha wasn't really his sister.
He wouldn't put his "love" for Scully (even
if he *did* love her) before his "sister's"
life.
"Never Again" by JillyBee
Scully and Ed's "connection"
While I'm not a believer in "love at first sight",
it would be wrong for me to deny that Scully and Ed
experienced that when they met for the first time
at the tattoo parlor. I also noticed this when Scully
was getting her tattoo, and right before they kissed.
::sighs and melts into a puddle of noromo goo:: These
special scenes between Scully and Ed can only be described
as an intense connection between two strangers, who
know nothing about each other, yet they obviously
want more and are destined to be together (ex~ Jack
and Rose in Titanic). After I noticed this, I also
realized (with a smile :-), how Mulder and Scully
never experienced such a moment of closeness like
this before. IMNO, (in my noromo opinion :-) if Mulder
and Scully were so "deeply in love", they
would have had at least one "love at first sight"
moment.
Mulder's lack of concern at Scully's behavior
Sure, he ran to the phone many times, waiting for
Scully to call him. However, this behavior still does
not explain Mulder's reaction to Scully's unusual
behavior. Not once did he ask her, "What's wrong?
You can talk to *me* about it." As a friend,
he should have done something like this. His lack
of concern not only proves how he is reluctant to
get involved in Scully's personal feelings/emotions,
but it also proves that Mulder and Scully are not
nearly as close as shippers believe they are. Face
it~ if he honestly loved her in a romantic way, he
would insist Scully to tell him everything. Case closed
:-)
Scully's attitude toward Mulder
More proof in this episode that a relationship is
a *bad* idea, is Scully's behavior/attitude toward
Mulder. Two words that sum up her attitude toward
him are "pissed off". While I understand
that she was not herself during this entire episode,
I see her behavior as the anger and frustration she's
always felt during her life with Mulder finally being
released in this way. IMNO, a relationship between
them would not be a "beautiful thing", but
it would eventually turn out like their behavior toward
each other in this ep. It would also cause a relationship
between them to end quickly as well.
Scully's constant reluctance to tell Mulder more
When Scully told Ed the story about how she snuck
cigarettes from her mom at thirteen, I was not only
surprised, but I also thought, "Wait a second.
She never even *considered* telling Mulder this story!"
This is more proof that Mulder and Scully are not
nearly as close as shippers believe they are. I mean,
she told a complete stranger a personal story from
her past, before she even *thought* of telling her
partner and friend of four years the same story! Isn't
communication the key to all good relationships? Hmm...
:-D
More of Scully's constant reluctance to tell Mulder
more
After Scully called Mulder from Ed's apartment, then
hung up when he answered the phone, I instantly felt
deja-vu....because she had done the exact same thing
before! In Christmas Carol, Scully called Mulder to
tell him about Emily, then she hung up once he answered!
If she loves him romantically, then why does she repeatedly
not fill him in on important situations in her life?
That's what I would like to know.... :-D
"Elegy" by JillyBee
Why I believe a relationship would be out of character
for Scully! I was watching the season 4 episode, Elegy
for the first time. During the end scene for some
odd reason, I wanted Mulder and Scully to hug really
badly! However, I thought of some platonic explanations
Cassie showed me during one of the many times I went
to her with a noromo-related problem. Then, I realized
how much Elegy proves that a relationship will ruin
the show. During the end scene/confrontation between
Mulder and Scully, they don't hug. Instead Scully
leaves, then cries in her car alone. The fact that
she didn't cry in Mulder's arms (despite everything
she said about him to the FBI therapist woman) proves
how reluctant she has always been (throughout the
entire series) to get close to him. If she gets close
to him all of a sudden in season 7, it will not only
be wrong, but it will go against everything Scully's
character has felt in the past. Therefore, a relationship
will be out of character *and* unrealistic.
"Detour" by JillyBee
A lot of shippers would say that M&S happy, *friendly*
behavior in Detour meant they were flirting because
they are in love :-P Unfortunately for them, that
is not the case imo. On a normal basis, M&S deal
with a lot of stress which prevents them from having
fun and enjoying themselves in each others presence.
So, once they got away from the stress of their lives
in Florida, they finally got the chance to relax and
enjoy themselves. The "flirting" was only
them enjoying the rare chance of having fun....and
enjoying their time together as friends.
When Scully brought the wine and cheese into Mulder's
hotel room and talked about how they weren't supposed
to be together, I thought it was a sweet gesture which
showed an interesting, new side of Scully. Because
of their "vacation", she finally allowed
herself to let herself go around Mulder and enjoy
herself in his company. She didn't do it to get drunk
and sleep with Mulder. However, Mulder didn't seem
to realize the significance of the "wine and
cheese date", because he mostly talked about
the case, then left! This shows that he really can
be "obsessed with his work" (as even Scully
once said), so a relationship between them really
wouldn't work out. Their quest would become much more
important to Mulder (as it always has been), and if
they did get together, the relationship would end
quickly.
That's all I have, for now....I have heard shippers
talking about what a big deal it was for Scully to
pack Mulder's clothes in the end, but I really didn't
think it was that amazing....so I didn't add the defense
I wrote for that scene.

"How The Ghosts Stole Christmas" by
JillyBee
In the beginning, when Mulder "begged" Scully
to go inside the haunted house with him, many shippers
believe he did it "because he was in love with
her" (They seem to use that defense a lot, don't
they? :-) However, I believe Mulder only asked Scully
along for all the reasons Maurice and Lida told him
later in the house, like his fear of being alone and
how Scully is the only person he has. As for Scully
being there with him, missing Christmas with her family,
I believe she originally intended just to talk to him
in his car, then she planned on leaving. She agreed
to stay, because her car keys "disappeared".
I *will* admit that she wanted to stay with him voluntarily,
but IMNO, Scully only stayed because she was worried
about Mulder being alone in the spooky (and possibly
dangerous) house. Also, Mulder is her friend, and it
would have been selfish and rude of her to leave him
all alone like that on Christmas Eve. Would you leave
a friend behind in a similar situation? Noromo opinions
aside, I know *I* wouldn't.
"Arcadia" by JillyBee
Okay, *all* the shippers I have talked to over the
past year use Arcadia as "proof" of Mulder
and Scully's "passionate love" ::gags:: for
each other. One of the many scenes in question is most
frequently used as proof. It is the scene in the bedroom,
where Mulder is lying on the bed and Scully walks in
wearing the facial mask and robe. As shippers say, Scully
appeared like that in front of Mulder, because she fesls
*really* comfortable being around him. I agree with
that.....But, they also feel that she does it because
she is in love with him. I thought about that a lot,
and I can see how it makes sense to them. I've heard
of some women in a long term romantic relationship who
are afraid to let their boyfriends see them wax their
upper lip! Sure, Scully is comfortable and relaxed around
Mulder, her *friend*. However, I believe it is for another
reason. The way she behaved in that situation (especially
throwing him the shirt) reminded me of a brother in
his sister's bedroom.....with *no* sexual tension! As
for the facial mask, I know I wash my face and put goop
on it in front of my family (including my dad) *all*
the time! It is no big deal! Scully's action there shows
how she thinks of Mulder as family, like a brother,
and not in a "ooh baby I want you bad" kind
of way.....If she *did* feel that way, her behavior
as "Laura Petrie" would have been *much* different,
IMNO.
"Alpha" by JillyBee
I *finally* found a rational explanation for why Mulder
and Scully get "jealous"! :-D We've all heard
about, maybe even noticed, Mulder and Scully's infamous
"jealousy" when the other person "interacts"
with someone else of the opposite sex. (For example,
Scully's attitude toward Bambi, Mulder's attitude toward
Phillip Padgett.) For the longest time, shippers have
insisted this "jealousy" results from romantic
love for one another, and their "ever present"
sexual tension ::gags:: Unfortunately, I didn't know
*what* to make of it....The cause of this "apparent
shippiness" remained a mystery to me....until I
watched Alpha recently. During the episode, it bothered
me that I still had no noromo explanation for Scully's
"jealousy" toward Karen Berquist, or any of
their "significant others". Suddenly, the
answer came to me during the scene where the agents
first meet Karen. Scully....and Mulder don't become
"jealous" so easily because they're in love!
With the special, *platonic*, and very close bond they
share in their position, they have become almost isolated
toward everyone else, especially of the opposite sex.
So naturally, anyone else (like Bambi and Padgett) who
enters their private world is subconciously viewed as
a threat, and therefore treated that way. IMNO, the
"jealousy" is only human nature at work. Also,
both agents are afraid of being alone (according to
How the Ghosts Stole Christmas), so they naturally become
afraid at the possibility of someone else entering their
"world" and taking their only friend away.
"The Austin Powers Theory" by JillyBee
This is the last place I thought I would find a Musing,
but it was sooo obvious, I just could not ignore it!
::takes a deep breath:: Remember the scene where Dr.
Evil drank some of Austin's mojo and started acting
like, well, Austin? Right after that, he decided to
"do the naked pretzel" with Frau. Before they
did it, she kept asking him if after they had sex, it
would make their relationship all "weird".
Of course he said no, (I mean, he's a guy!) and they
did it.....At the same time, I was instantly reminded
of M&S, and how noromos would describe a situation
like that on TXF! The next morning, when Dr. Evil and
Frau ran into each other at the coffee machine, things
*had* changed in their relationship, and both of them
even admitted it. I nearly jumped off the floor, 'cause
I found "noromo proof"! With *platonic* friends
like Dr. Evil and Frau *and* M&S, a sexual relationship
would not be a "beautiful thing", but it would
change their friendship negatively in the future. The
awkwardness between Dr. Evil and Frau was my "noromo
proof" that M&S should not do *anything* remotely
romantic with each other. The End :-)
